The preview exhibition at the newly erected Museum der Moderne Salzburg, presents film, multimedia and light installations, a substantial part of which are drawn from the TBA21 collection. ein-leuchten, curated by Agnes Husslein-Arco and Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza is a festive gesture expressing lightness and inventiveness and celebrating the inauguration of the new Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg, providing local and international visitors the opportunity to experience the new museum spaces as well as a broad range of art works by a varied selection of international artists.
The exhibition ein-leuchten features different aspects of light – an incandescent or nocturnal material, evanescent and substantial: Light used for the projection of videos and filmic works, light in complex media and sculptural environments, light as source for brightness in neon and LED works, and light in its atmospheric condition. "Light" in this sense is derived from the Greek concept of "phainomenon" – the appearance – something which is emerging in the process of becoming and metamorphosis. For a brief period of time, "ein-leuchten" articulates the stage of emergence and appearance before the dimension of being and continuity sets in.
The exhibition also deals with the nature of human perception in the age of technology and the experience of perceiving that is determined by multi-layered visual stimuli. Artists working with light and media construct places and create experiences where seeing takes place, seeing beyond the seen, activating a perception beyond the system of Euclidean planes and coordinates, infused by images, memories, and histories. On a total of 2.600 m2 of exhibition space, video-installations with narrative and interactive elements, text related neon works, sculptural as well as pictorial light works using light fixtures and bulbs, as well as installations and atmospheric artworks are displayed.
