Using forms of contextual and architectural reconfiguration and displacement, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset create room for new and altered interpretations, unveiling the mechanisms of ideological control that underlie everyday objects and sites. Social Mobility, Fig. 2 was part of their touring exhibition “The Welfare Show,” which was investigating socio-political power structures. In this show, the artists launched a targeted intervention into the function of a waiting room, creating space for new and altered interpretations as the sculptural installation morphs into a staged scenery of psycho-architecture, metaphorizing the hopelessness of current social conditions.
