Conversation: Janet Cardiff with Estrella de Diego
Introduced by Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza

"Fantasy, abandoned by reason, produces impossible monsters: united with it, is the mother of the arts and the origin of their marvels”.
- Francisco de Goya -

In conjunction with the exhibition The Murder of Crows at Matadero Madrid, Cardiff is holding a conversation with Estrella de Diego, professor of contemporary art at Madrid's Complutense University, about the relation between Goya’s engravings and Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller’s installation. The conversation will take place at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, which holds the largest world collection of Goya’s engravings including his original copper plates.

Goya’s famous engraving The Dream of Reason Produces Monsters, which marks the beginning of his Caprichos series (1799), is one of the inspirations behind the immersive sound installation by Cardiff & Miller.
