Cama (Bed) investigates Los Carpinteros' interest in objects of domesticity: by altering the original form of a simple bed, the duo also subverts its meanings and function. The frame and the mattress of the metal bed have two bifurcating extensions, which loop around themselves, creating a surreal highway junction. Though the bed cannot be used in the traditional way, it alludes to actions such as sleeping, dreaming, and having sex. Firmly posited in the realm of the domestic, Cama explores the mutable territory between the pragmatic and the imaginary. The highly intimate human refuge of the home is evocatively juxtaposed with the realm of public (exhibition) space.
