The Alien Within – A living laboratory of Western society

How can art address the most uncomfortable issues head-on? In response to the aftermath of this year’s European and national elections in Sweden, Malmö Konsthall turns into a think tank. This will seek to raise debate in today’s public sphere around hot subjects such as trans-cultural integration and fear as a fabricator of images. Enriched by the cosmopolitan fabric that makes up Malmö as a city, Malmö Konsthall will reflect on forward-thinking models of contemporary Western society, and give audiences the opportunity to take responsibility for the world as it is.

The eclectic installation Animatograph – Iceland-Edition (House of Parliament/House of Obsession) Destroy Thingvellir from 2005 by the late German theatre director, filmmaker and visual artist Christoph Schlingensief (1960-2010) forms the basis for an on-going staging of talks, screenings, concerts and seminars by emerging as well as renowned Swedish and international artists, writers, sociologists, art and theatre historians.

The Animatograph is Schlingensief’s first presentation in Sweden. It is a walkable artwork combining elements of the visual (sculptures, videos) and performing arts (live actions, spoken theatre, opera). As a universal and idiosyncratic representation of 21st century human nature, where one is faced by a deluge of images capturing volatile self-portraits, it is also a “soul-writer” recording the chaotic cosmos of everyday life.

Taking inspiration from Schlingensief’s experimental ideas, Malmö Konsthall will implement a number of off-site events and educational workshops in various locations of Malmö. Running alongside – to activate but also overpaint one another – the think tank, the Animatograph and the off-site events will attempt to demonstrate how reality encompasses fiction; how every person is an active agent in creating the world we inhabit together.

The Alien Within – A living laboratory of Western society is a project by Malmö Konsthall in partnership with Goethe-Institut.
The realisation of Schlingensief’s Animatograph is in collaboration with Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Vienna, and the support of Aino Laberenz / Estate Christoph Schlingensief.
