Museums Uniting a Divided World
Guided tour of Pedagogies of War at Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid
18 May 2026
May 18 marks the International Museum Day, this year celebrated under the theme Museums Uniting a Divided World—an invitation to reflect on the role of museums as bridges across cultural, social, and geopolitical divisions, fostering dialogue, understanding, inclusion, and peace within and between communities worldwide.
One of the main causes of these fractures in today's world is armed conflict. Pedagogies of War, a temporary exhibition by Ukrainian artists Roman Khimei and Yarema Malashchuk, organized by TBA21 on Floor -1 of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, invites visitors to reflect on how war transforms everyday perception and behavior: not only through visible destruction, but through quieter mechanisms such as waiting, adaptation, and resistance. Four video installations form an itinerary that goes beyond documentation, exploring how fiction can reveal truths about violence and its consequences.
On this occasion, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza offers, in collaboration with TBA21, four 30-minute guided tours with a limited capacity of 25 people. They will be led by Marina Avia, Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, and Elena Savater, Head of Exhibitions and Public Programs at TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary.
