Native Imaginaries at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid
Workshop with Ange Cayuman
30 November 2026 | 15:30 – 18:30
Native Imaginaries is a creative research project that brings archival footage of Indigenous Peoples into collective screening and discussion sessions. These gatherings encourage nütramkawün, a Mapudungun term referring to an in-depth conversation, through which participants can question historical representations of Indigenous Peoples and approach the images through these communities’ own voices and memories.
The workshop draws on visual archives held by the film library at the Universidad de La Frontera. These include footage recorded in southern Chile during the first half of the twentieth century, showing scenes of everyday life, landscapes and different representations of Mapuche communities and territories. Watching the footage together creates a space to discuss these images and the histories they convey.
Ange Cayuman is a Mapuche writer, journalist and audiovisual artist whose work spans film programming, mediation and audiovisual curating. His practice focuses on Indigenous archives, Indigenous diasporas and self-representations of ancestral diversities. He is a member of the Rangiñtulewfü Collective and has been part of the programming team for FICWallmapu, the International Indigenous Film Festival of Wallmapu.
