The photographs of Mauro Restiffe, invariably in black and white, are produced without any manipulation or artificial lighting. The images that result are therefore grainy and contain a broad range of greys. They contain some recurring themes, such as landscapes, modernist interiors, and urban architecture. Some series make explicit references to cities - such as "Sao Paulo" (2009), "Taipei" (2006), "Istanbul" (2004), and whole continents like "Europe" - while others portray them by recording the historical events that occur in them. Restiffe meticulously frames the activities that take place in these places and establishes formal relations between highly diverse capital cities. His approach is always that of a documentarist rather than a recorder of poses, although people do feature in his images. – Mauro Restiffe, BES Photo 2011, Banco Espìrito Santo, 2011
