Pajés and artists of the Huni Kuin inaugurate the symposium with ceremonial songs and dances and introduce their healing practices and philosophy. During the two-day symposium Huni Kuin pajés perform healing rituals and apply their sacred cures to members of the audience, who are invited to consult them.

Participants: Txana Bane, Sabino Ixã, Dua Buse, Ayani Huni Kuin, Tadeu Siã, Lauro Iasã, Sávio Kixtin, and Edinaldo Kaxinawá.

A conversation between the publisher Anna Dantes, the biologist Alexandre Quinet, and the Huni Kuin pajés redraws the genesis of Una Isĩ Kayawa, the “Book of Healing,” which compiles, for the first time ever, descriptions of the 109 plant species used in indigenous therapies of the Huni Kuin people of Jordão and Tarauacá and their application in various curative treatments.

The social anthropologist Pirjo Kristiina Virtanen provides an introduction to the Huni Kuin’s socio-philosophy and their healing practices that stimulate relationships between human and nonhuman subjects. These relations can be established through the use of certain herbal substances, chanting, or paintings that cause the spirits to materialize, enabling healing transformations.

The symmetrical health proposal tries to absorb the contributions of symmetrical anthropology, as proposed by Bruno Latour, a reverse anthropology, and to apply it to the field of caring practitioners, recognizing indigenous knowledge and curing practices as having their own rationality, technologies, methodologies, teaching tools, production of knowledge, and calculations. This is an opportunity for a richer and more promising variation of ways of thinking, feeling, and experiencing care and life.
