A TBA21 initiative in Colombia in collaboration with Hans Ulrich Obrist; Hay Festival, Cartagena de Indias; Laboratorio Interdisciplinario para las Artes, Bogota; Universidad Nacional Bogota; lugar a dudas, Cali and Outset London.
DISCUSIONES & DEMOSTRACIONES was a series of events hosted by TBA21, Vienna and its Colombian and international partners and held in Cartagena, Bogota and Cali between January 25 and January 29, 2013. These public events were the result of a yearlong inquiry into Colombia’s past and present and its contemporary art scenes, as well as its rich heritage in the social sciences, philosophy, archaeology, and architecture. The program involved over 40 Colombian artists, thinkers, researchers, and curators and provides local and international audiences with a spirited exploration of the intellectual milieu and artistic production of a territory that has been extraordinarily fertile in the areas of contemporary art and culture. One of the highlights of TBA21’s engagement in Colombia was the premiere of Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Thomas Nordanstad’s GOLDEN DAYS (Remedios, Colombia 2012) on January 28 in Bogota. Commissioned by TBA21 and entirely shot on site, the film uncovers the daily life of the gold mining town of Remedios.

In collaboration with Hans Ulrich Obrist—curator, author, and co-director of the Serpentine Gallery in London—TBA21 has initiated an intensive investigation of Colombia’s contemporary artistic landscapes, engaging with individuals and institutions and analyzing creative and production dynamics from ontological and historical perspectives. To this end, the foundation has consulted prominent specialists in Colombian art and explored trajectories of cultural, political, and sociological importance. This research does not project a map of Colombia’s art production but rather showcases and celebrates multilayered and multigenerational subjectivities. Since much of Colombia’s history has been transmitted orally, the research has used a variety of methodological tools, but has mostly relied on personal meetings, interviews, and studio visits.

Public events in the form of panel discussions and “demonstrations” activate comparative mechanisms between often divergent oral testimonies and allow to sketch a complex picture of a turbulent and multilayered history. Such an endeavor generates a critical discourse from the inside about a territory that is often misperceived by “outsiders.” These productive confrontations provide an understanding of the specific narratives that connect nature, corporeality, and culture (from the sacred to the political) and that underlie individual notions of social and political consciousness and perhaps even alternative conceptions of reality.
