Olaf Nicolai – Welcome to the Tears of
St. Lawrence

Kunstmuseum Thurgau / Kartause Ittingen

Welcome to the Tears of St. Lawrence (2005) continues a fascination for observing the night sky in the open air. It centers on an astronomical spectacle: every year the Perseides can be seen in the first half of August as a shower of falling stars whose name appears to have its origins in the constellation "Perseus". In reference to the martyrdom of St. Lawrence on August 10, AD 258 the Perseid meteors are often referred to as the "Tears of St. Lawrence". Olaf Nicolai proclaims the phenomenon as an exhibition contribution whose realization is independent from site and occasion: through catalogs and posters the work is presented to would-be observers who can locate viewing times for the event by consulting a timetable. The concept of attending an exhibition at a particular place becomes a relative one, by creating a work of art that adroitly makes use of prominent art exhibitions as an intermediating platform. > >
